The new version of eMule finally arrives

It's been almost a year since the guys at the eMule project released a new version of it's hugely popular file sharing client but finally it's here although don't get too excited.

There are no major changes to the look and feel of eMule in this new version but they have included a a handy "ISP obfuscation" option which aims to prevent your ISP blocking eMule traffic which is an increasingly common occurrence. When you install for the first time, it takes you through the connection setup wizard as normal with the exception that this time, it asks you if you want to activate the obfuscation option which you might as well - you've got nothing to lose even if it doesn't work for your ISP. In addition to this, the team have made some other major Kad protocol improvements such as better NAT handling, direct callbacks, flood protections, etc.

There have also been several changes made to the message system to get rid of spammers and stay in touch with friends with dynamic IPs. As regards the look, there have been some minor changes such as it now stores searches between eMule sessions, there's a searchfilter for shared files and easier access to the comment filter. In addition, there are the usual small bug fixes and changes.

If you've noticed your eMule downloads have significantly slowed down over the past year, then this new beta version, with ISP obfuscation, may be the answer. It's still the best P2P file sharing network out there by miles too.

Changes

Added the obfuscation setting to the First Time wizard and removed the full chunk upload setting instead Disabled peercache downloads by default (deprecated) Added a Beta nagging dialog Beta versions now create a small test text file which is shared by eMule to help us debugging protocol changes (esp Kad). On exit this file is deleted Fixed a bug with the "Open Directory" menuitem in the shared files window

    • Better NAT handling
    • Saves searches between sessions
  • Cons

    • No major interface improvements
    • Still tricky to connect to servers sometimes
    • ISP obfuscation doesn't work for all ISPs

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.
